Curatorial Rationale

The title of my exhibition, “Post-truth”, refers to the phenomenon of the way modern public figures, especially politicians, as well as media, tend to focus on emotion during public debate, while omitting meritorical aspect of the matter discussed. It is a term encapsulating quite a frightening perspective on future politics, in which the appeal of truth through emotional and irrational lens is more important than the pursuit of truth itself, which in turn paves the way for propaganda, unmoderated spread of lies and fake news, and general informational chaos. By presenting my exhibition I hoped to raise awareness about this issue, as in my opinion it is a very alarming and important phenomenon, especially now in the twenty-first century, when we are equipped with vast communicational tools.

Themes that I intended to convey in my piece contain

themselves primarily with communication, information and

interpretation of information. Most of the inspiration

acquired was the result of being immersed in the culture of

information overflow characteristic for my generation, as

well as being a young person making first steps in the adult

life of today.

As this year’s exhibition takes place online due to pandemic circumstances, means of displaying my pieces was very limited. It is especially unfortunate due to the fact that the majority of my works are three-dimensional, thus they will not be able to be fully experienced through the internet. Nevertheless, by the appropriate order of display of my pieces, I hope to create a sense of a process from the viewer, who is supposed to be able to feel the same emotions and make the same realizations as I did during art-making process.

Tytuł mojej wystawy, Postprawda, odnosi się do zjawiska coraz wyraźniej zauważalnego we współczesnym świecie, gdzie politycy, a także osoby medialne, używają środków manipulacji emocjonalnej jako środka retorycznego w dyskusji. Zjawisko to charakteryzuje dość przerażającą perspektywę na przyszłość polityki, gdzie iluzja prawdy uzyskana dzięki emocjonalnemu i irracjonalnemu podejściu staje się ważniejsza od poszukiwania prawdy samej w sobie. To z kolei stanowi podłoże dla propagandy, niekontrolowanego potoku kłamstw, "fake-newsów", ogólnie rzecz biorąc- chaosu informacyjnego. Poprzez wystawę chciałbym zwiększyć świadomość społeczną o tym istotnym oraz naglącym problemie, który staje się tym ważniejszy w dwudziestym pierwszym wieku- okresie, w którym wyposażenie w zaawansowane środki komunikacji staje się coraz bardziej powszechne.

Motywy poruszone w pracach to zatem przede wszystkim komunikacja, informacja, a także interpretacja informacji. Inspirację czerpałem z kultury chaosu informacyjnego charakterystycznej dla mojego pokolenia, a także z perspektywy młodej osoby wkraczającej w dorosły świat we współczesnej odsłonie.

Do stworzenia moich prac użyłem różnych obiektów niemających pierwotnie przeznaczenia artystycznego: ubrań, kabli, a nawet fragmentów biurka. Zabieg ten miał na celu podkreślenie wagi motywu reinterpretacji jako tematu wystawy.
